Systemic Name

What is systemic name?

The systemic name is a system of naming chemical compound in science of chemistry in general.

The systemic name can be given by using IUPAC nomenclature.

These are the steps in naming DMPS molecule using IUPAC;
1. Identify the parent hydrocarbon chain. (The longest continuous chain of carbon atoms)
2. Identify the functional group and the position of the functional group.
3. Number the carbon atom.
4. There are more than one of the same type of side-chain of mercapto, add the prefix di-.
5. Number is written first before functional group name.
6. This molecule is carboxylic acid because it has SOOOH at the end of the carbon chain. SOOOH is sulfonic acid.
7. So, the systemic name for this compound is
2,3–dimercapto–1–propanesulfonic acid (DMPS).

DMPS

What is the complex formed when DMPS binds with Mercury?

The complex compound formed when DMPS binds with mercury is
'bis(2,3-dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonic acid) mercury (IV)'
